Blog 2: A 4G Internet connection during the Corona Crisis?
June 2, 2020
We are currently in the midst of the corona crisis and that is having quite an impact on the way we work. We are in the midst of the economy and a half and the advice is to work from home whenever possible. Forced by the current situation, it turns out that working from home is quite possible and that consultations or meetings via video work just as well.
Still, working from home presents some challenges, especially securing documents and other data on the server can be a challenge. These data should not be taken home on paper or usb stick with the risk of being lost. The government has set up a website with tips for working safely at home: Digital Government - Working at Home
By the way, any knowledgeable ICT person will be able to help you with security. Usually a VPN connection will be advised, with this way of working the documents are always secure on the server. To work securely with a VPN connection, it is important that the (main) location where the server is located can be reached at a fixed public IP address, preferably with a /30 or /29 subnet. In the recent past, a fixed IP address was not possible with a 4G connection, you always had to rely on a fixed connection.
There are still many places in the Netherlands where fixed connections are not satisfactory in terms of speed and business glass is too expensive to build. Working from home and using the VPN puts much more demands on the Internet connection and the speed of the Internet connection can start to hinder working from home. If that is the case I recommend you look at a 4G connection with fixed IP addresses, they are out there, they are fast, available quickly, available throughout the EU28 and certainly not expensive.
